Emily Barker

“I’m going to a gig tonight”
“Is it Emily?”

That’s been a standard exchange for several years now so it’s safe to say I’ve seen Emily Barker a time or two.

It’s also safe to say that The Toerag Sessions record launch show was one of the best so far.  The album is a recorded-as-live analogue journey celebrating pure vocals, musicianship and lyrics of loss and home.  The live performance was perfectly in keeping – a stripped-down set with no distractions, allowing the packed crowd to focus on the music.  Ranging from achingly vulnerable to soaringly powerful, Emily’s voice was only enhanced by an enviable selection of guitars and a guest turn from long-time bandmate, Gill Sandell, on backing vocals and accordion.

Highlights of the evening, other than raising money for Shelter From The Storm and plentiful pastries, were amongst the oldest and newest songs of the set, Lord, I Want An Exit and Stockholm Down Below.

The Toerag Sessions is already number 11 on the all-new vinyl chart and is available from all usual stockists.  Check emilybarker.com for details.
